About this film, it was not planned, when Darrel and I set out that morning on our trip to Presidio I had no idea of what we were soon to witness. Slaughter bound horses loading into Mexico transport trucks. It was heartbreaking watching them load, knowing full well what they were soon to face, and being unable to help them. As a Cherokee Elder I feel strongly that as compassionate, intelligent human beings we can and should do better by the horses – allowing anyone to profit off the suffering of innocent animals is the atrocity of a nation! - Neta Rhyne

Ghost was rescued from a kill buyer by Amber Taylor and saved from going on that fateful journey to a place he was never meant to be ...the Mexico slaughter house.

Ghost is a "Medicine Hat Spirit Horse". Native American legends say that Medicine Hat horses were believed to have the magical ability to protect their riders from injury and death in battle and warn their riders of danger. Other tribes would try to steal these horses in hopes of getting their good luck.

EVERY YEAR tens of thousands wild and domestic horses are hauled across our borders to Canada and Mexico for slaughter to satisfy the demand for horse meat in foreign countries.
ONCE A HORSE is tagged for slaughter they become a commodity and their only value is "cents per pound". If rejected for slaughter they become a liability and treated as such... often left to die, no food, no water, no form of humane euthanasia.

On February May 19, 2021, the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act H.R. 3355 was introduced in the 117th Congress.
Sponsored by Representatives Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.), this important legislation will prevent the horse slaughter industry from re-establishing operations in the U.S. and prohibit the export of US wild and domestic horses for slaughter into Canada and Mexico.

FINAL JOURNEY
I WATCHED IN HORROR as he loaded them up,
…waiting before them a big noisy truck. EYES AS BIG AS SAUCERS and nostrils flared, …with a smell of fear and sweat in the air. MOTHERS WITH FOALS still close by their sides …not knowing what lies at the end of this ride. HE STANDS WITH HIS WHIP at the loading dock …and forces them into the hot metal box. THE SOUNDS I HEAR now are slips and slides …and foals now falling at their mothers sides. THEIR KICKING AND SCREAMING seems to fall on deaf ears, because his heart has grown cold over the years. THE SOUND OF THE DOOR shutting them in, …sends chills down my spine - once again. MY HEART SINKS LOW as the truck pulls away, …let their death be quick and forgive us I pray. Jennifer Thomas |
